2009 Columbia River Tour Description

Four days of rowing on one of the natural wonders of the world: we follow in the footsteps of the great explorers, Lewis and Clark, along the Lower Columbia River Water Trail.

Shuttle to Astoria from Oaks Park will be provided on the evening before the start of the tour. Camping will be provided or lodging at extra cost. We will have a pre-tour dinner at a local brew pub with entertainment to follow at local hangouts.

Day One begins in the historic fishing town of Astoria, Oregon. We launch shortly after sunrise from Alderbrook Station, site of a picturesque gill net loft, built in the 19th century to dry fishing nets. From here we briefly enter the main channel of the Columbia at its greatest width. Rounding Tongue Point, the backwater scenic adventure begins. Each crew will row approximately two alternating two-hour shifts. We will arrive in Skamokawa, Washington by lunchtime and then set up camp. This leaves plenty of time to explore the small community before dinner and the evening’s entertainment.

Day Two begins along a narrow channel bordering the Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge. This will be one of our best opportunities to spot deer, bald eagles, or otter in their natural habitat. We will then pass by the small community of Cathlamet before entering the one of the more challenging sections of the river. Winds here can be strong, but we should have them at our back and make good time. By noon we will be at Bat Water Station, a private moorage and camping area. We will have the area to ourselves for swimming, games or just relaxing in the sun. Following diner we will entertainment around a large campfire.

Day Three we will pass in and out of the main channel of the Columbia exploring passageways behind the larger islands. The mid point of this day’s row will take us through the Industrial community of Longview, Washington and under the grand Longview Bridge. This will be our longest day of rowing bringing us to our campsite on Sand Island a short distance from the old town area of Saint Helens, Oregon. We will shuttle by launch into town for dining and entertainment.

Day Four we will be joined by boats from other local rowing clubs for the final push through Portland and into Oaks Park. The day begins with a 8 mile excursion along the Multnomah Channel behind Sauvies Island. This is a very picturesque area with many house boats and watercraft. We will emerge at the Willamette River in Saint Johns and travel beneath the many bridges and skyline of down town Portland. When we arrive at Oaks Park a welcoming community and celebration will be waiting.
